Dear FVS Community,
The reason I joined Patreon was to create a space in which I could explore the paths of the book Flexible Visual Systems. To evolve the content into online courses, articles, and interviews. Together with a community, giving me feedback about what they want and need.
The beauty of the systems perspective is that it allows us to ask the small questions, like how to build a modular system, but also the big questions, how do the systems of life work?
The following conversational article is somewhere in the middle. It recognizes that there are a lot of misunderstandings between the different disciplines in design and beyond, and the hope that if we can come to a common understanding, it will make all of our (professional) lives will be a bit easier.
I called this article a conversational article because it is layouted in the spirit of conversational design (https://flexiblevisualsystems.info/resources/conversationaldesign/) I make my thought process transparent and show how these thoughts are questioned by my peers. It is not a text that pretends to be final, but an invitation to join me in the process of developing consilience in design: https://flexiblevisualsystems.info/resources/consilienceindesign/
I am very curious to hear from you:
-
If you are a designer, in which of the four disciplines or in between which disciplines do you see yourself? I am trying to map all current disciplines. It is totally fine to be in several disciplines at once.
-
If you are not a designer but work with designers, how do you embed design in your discipline?
-
If you are a designer or not, we need to work together on consilience. I am interested in the gaps you experienced and maybe even managed to bridge.
I wish you a fantastic week, wherever you are!
All the best from sunny Hamburg,
Martin
